Instructional Format
Mornings and early afternoons at the Nashville Global Academy will be devoted to instruction in the academic disciplines. Rather than the traditional one hour of instruction per discipline/subject, students will spend 90 minutes in some disciplines/subjects such as the language arts, mathematics and the sciences. Late afternoons will be devoted to the co-curricular experiences that will be studios, practica or other enhancements. For example, a student could take classes in voice or piano, participate in a playwriting or drama group, or play on an intramural soccer team, or take ballet or modern dance lessons, or shadow a scientist in a science laboratory. These co-curricular experiences will be diverse and students will participate in one or two such experiences each semester.
Reading instruction will be phonics-based and all students will learn Latin and Spanish. In addition to Latin and Spanish, all students will receive instruction in either Japanese or Mandarin Chinese. In keeping with the global thrust of the Nashville Global Academy, students will have diverse domestic and study abroad experiences. For example, grades K-5 will engage in domestic travel experiences with an international focus or flavor. Trips to Washington, DC, for example, will not only expose students to important aspects of our nation, but also to those of other nations while trips to New York City will focus on the United Nations. Beginning in the sixth grade, students will engage in study abroad experiences. A parent will accompany his/her child on all such experiences, which will help to enlighten the parents and enable them to become more knowledgeable and supportive of their youngsters.
